Milk Bar And Plugrà Team Up On A Limited-Edition Butter Lover’s Cookie, On Sale Through December 5

Milk Bar Butter Lover's Cookies stacked on a white and pink Milk Bar tin, one broken open, beside a wrapped cookie and a box of Plugrà unsalted butter.

Milk Bar has a limited-edition cookie built around one ingredient. The Butter Lover’s Cookie, made with Plugrà European-style butter, went on sale November 1 and runs through December 5, 2026, while supplies last, according to the announcement Dairy Farmers of America, Plugrà’s owner, released on November 2. It’s sold at Milk Bar’s bakeries, through local on-demand delivery and online at milkbarstore.com.

What’s in the Butter Lover’s Cookie

Milk Bar describes it as “golden, rich, and unapologetically butter-forward,” with the bakery’s usual soft middle and crisp edges. The ingredient list on Milk Bar’s product page leads with flour and Plugrà butter, followed by light brown sugar, cane sugar, eggs, cake flour and nonfat milk powder. Further down are natural butter flavor and natural brown butter flavor, plus a yellow food coloring. The cookie contains milk, egg, wheat and soy, and Milk Bar says its treats are made in a facility that also handles peanuts and tree nuts.

That brown butter flavor is the closest link to our own kitchen. Our Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies get theirs the long way, from butter cooked in a saucepan until it smells nutty, and they’re a chocolate chip cookie, not a copy of Milk Bar’s.

Why Plugrà

Plugrà is a brand of Dairy Farmers of America, a dairy cooperative the release says is owned by 9,000 family farmers. The butter is made in America in a European style, slow-churned to 82% butterfat, which the release calls “the European standard.”

The pairing goes back to the start of Milk Bar, which opened in New York’s East Village in 2008. Christina Tosi, Milk Bar’s founder, said Plugrà was “a non-negotiable ingredient” in every batch of cookies, cakes and pie the bakery made on its opening day. Jenny Mehlman, senior director of marketing at Dairy Farmers of America, called the team-up “a dream collaboration.”

Price and where to buy it

The announcement lists the cookie “in a tin of 6 for $28.” On November 3, Milk Bar’s own website listed the Butter Lover’s Cookie Tin at $30, alongside its other six-cookie tins at $28.

In person, the cookie is at all Milk Bar bakeries, which the announcement lists in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Chicago. Milk Bar’s site says the cookies keep for five days at room temperature, or up to a month in the freezer.

Butter cookies from our kitchen

For a cookie where butter does most of the talking, our Irresistible Shortbread Cookies are a short list of ingredients led by a cup of unsalted butter, rolled and cut into shapes. Our Lemony Butter Cookies start with two sticks of butter and finish with a lemon glaze. Neither is a Milk Bar copycat.
