For The Holidays, Ocean Spray’s Jellied Cranberry Sauce Becomes A Box Of Compartés Dark Chocolates, Based On Carolina Gelen’s Viral Recipe
Chocolate Covered Cranberry Sauce is now something you can buy. Ocean Spray, the Los Angeles chocolatier Compartés and recipe developer Carolina Gelen announced it on Wednesday, November 4: a limited-edition box of four discs of Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce covered in Compartés chocolate. It costs $24.95 and is sold only online at Compartés’ website, while supplies last.

From a social video to a gift box
The box is based on a recipe Gelen first shared on social media in 2023, which the companies say has passed 10 million views. The idea is simple: slices of the canned, jellied sauce, the kind that slides out of the can in one ridged log, coated in chocolate.
“When I first shared this recipe, I knew the combination was out of the box,” Gelen said in the announcement. Kelvin Vuong, who heads Ocean Spray’s US foods and snacking business, said the brand noticed people finding “plenty of creative ways to use cranberry sauce, but dipping it in chocolate got our attention.”
Compartés developed the boxed version with Gelen. Its listing describes jellied cranberry sauce covered in dark chocolate, and the ingredient list is short: the chocolate, plus Ocean Spray cranberry sauce made from cranberries, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup and water. The candy is made in a facility that also handles milk, peanuts, wheat, egg, soy, tree nuts and sesame.
Ordering it before Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. Compartés says on the product page that orders ship in one to two business days, Monday through Friday, and that it packs orders with ice when the weather calls for it under what it calls a no-melt guarantee. Shipping is free on orders over $99. Compartés hasn’t posted a holiday order-by date for the box, and neither company has said how many it made.
Compartés is also bringing cranberry sauce to its chocolate turkeys. The company says its dark and milk chocolate Thanksgiving turkeys will be filled with Ocean Spray Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce this season.
Making it at home
Gelen’s own version is on NYT Cooking as Three-Ingredient Cranberry Chocolate Bites. It uses a can of jellied cranberry sauce, dark chocolate and coconut oil: the slices are frozen first, then coated in chocolate.
If cranberries on the dessert table are the goal, two of our cookies put them there. Our Cranberry Almond Shortbread Cookies work a little like Gelen’s idea, with a chilled log of dough sliced into rounds, this one studded with dried cranberries and almonds. Our Cranberry Orange Cookies pair dried cranberries with orange zest.
