Variations and Substitutions

Fudgy Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies

Coconut oil: For a different texture but still a delicious one, substitute coconut oil in place of the butter.

Gluten-free: Eliminate the regular flour in these triple chocolate cookies by replacing it with either oat flour or a store-bought, gluten-free flour blend in the same ratio listed.

Sweetness: To change the sweetness of the cookies try using maple syrup, coconut palm sugar, or honey.

Crunch: Mix some pecans or hazelnuts into the cookie batter to give a bit of texture.

Sweet and Salty: Sprinkle the tops of the cookies with large-flaked sea salt for a delicious contrast of flavors.

Sprinkles: To make the triple chocolate cookies festive, use colored sprinkles on top or mixed into the batter. Likewise,  heart-sprinkles or even Halloween ghosts are fun depending on the occasion.

How To Make The Best Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies

Using melted butter is what makes the cookies have a fudgier texture. Take care to melt the butter slowly though so that it doesn’t burn.

If you don’t have cocoa powder, know that you can melt down 50 grams of dark chocolate and add that in. This will still give the cookies an ultra-rich, creamy flavor.

Mix the batter by hand until just combined. Do not use an electric mixer as adding too much air to the batter will alter the texture of the cookies and make them more cake-like.

The cookies are done when the edges are just beginning to get crispy. The centers will still be unset and a bit soft, however, they firm up upon cooling.

The cookies are delicate coming out of the oven. If they’ve lost their shape, use a metal ring to get them back into proper circles. Also, let them cool on the pan. This helps them finish cooking and ensures they won’t break when you move them.

Save yourself some kitchen time knowing that you can prepare the cookies in advance. Mix together the dough, chill it, and portion it evenly into balls. Place them on a baking sheet and freeze them. Once frozen, store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. When you need them, bake them from frozen by adding 1-3 minutes to the cooking time and watching them carefully.

Store cooled triple chocolate cookies on the counter in an airtight container for up to a week.

Notes

  • Use higher-quality chocolate: Opt for premium chocolate for a more intense and authentic flavor.
  • Include nuts: Chopped walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts can add texture and extra flavor.
  • Sprinkle flaked salt: A touch of flaked salt on the cookies balances the sweetness.
  • Reduce the baking time: For chewier cookies, remove them after 12 minutes instead of 14 and let them cool on the baking sheet.
  • Shortening substitution: Use melted coconut oil in the same amount for a slightly different but equally delicious texture.
  • Wheat flour substitution: You can use oat flour or a gluten-free blend in the same proportion for a gluten-free version.
  • Brown sugar substitution: Use honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar for a more natural sweetness and a distinct flavor.
  • Cocoa powder substitution: If you don’t have cocoa powder, you can melt 50g of dark chocolate and add it to the mix for a richer, creamier flavor.
